Asked Questions
Q.
Is it easy to build a Legendary Mustang?
A.
Yes, it is! A Legendary Aircraft Mustang can
be built by anyone with modest mechanical skills, a little patience,
and the willingness to learn on the job. The Builders Manual is
complete and will take you through each step of the process. The
Legendary Mustang airframe kit is very complete and thoroughly thought
out. This affords the builder the ability to really just assemble
the aircraft and not have to do any difficult fabrication or engineering.
As with any homebuilt aircraft project, the Mustang does lend itself
to personalization. This is the fun part of building a replica warbird.
Q.
How long does it takes to build the airframe?
A.
This is a difficult question to answer due to the fact that we all
complete our tasks at varied rates. Some builders have finished
their airframes at less that 2000 hours while others have spent
over 3500 hours to get their Mustangs into the air. It really all
depends on the level of dedication and attention to detail a builder
brings to his project.
Q.
Are there any builder assistance programs available?
A.
On-site builder assistance programs are currently being developed
and will give the builder the opportunity to come to Santa Paula
to work on his project with a Legendary Aircraft technician. The
details of this program will be available through consultation with
the factory.
Q.
What are the Fastbuild Program costs and time savings?
A.
The Fastbuild Program costs and structure are available elsewhere
on this website. It is reasonable to say that if a builder ordered
his Mustang kit with both the wing and fuselage delivered with the
Fastbuild Stage 2 completed, he would recognize a time savings of
well over 1000 hours.
Q.
How much room does the build take?
A.
The Mustangs wing is a single piece structure that is about 25 long
after assembly. The fuselage is a couple of feet shorter. During
much of the building process, the wing and fuselage are being worked
on separately and arent joined. With this in mind, the early stages
of the project require a much smaller workspace than is needed in
the second half of the process. We have had builders complete their
aircraft in simple T-hangars and home garages while others have
the luxury of large hangars. A 30 x 30 workshop should be considered
the minimum space needed after the airframe is assembled into one
unit.
Q.
How much is the standard airframe kit?
A.
The standard Legendary Mustang airframe kit is $69,500.00.
Q.
Can the airframe be purchased in sub kits, or just as a complete
package?
A.
The kit can be purchased in 20 subkits. The cost of purchasing a
Mustang kit in this manner is only slightly higher that the complete
kit. This small increase is due to additional crating and shipping
costs.
Q.
Does the kit price include the engine package?
A.
No. The Firewall Forward Package is an additional expense.
Q.
In addition to the airframe kit and the engine package, what else
is required to fly?
A.
After the airframe and engine package are completed you will need
to add avionics, wiring, paint, and if desired, upholstery. Most
of these items are available from Legendary. Anything that we cannot
provide can be easily sourced.
Q.
Do you have Instrument Packages available?
A.
We are working with an avionics vendor to soon offer completed front
and rear instrument panels. These will be available in a couple
of different levels of complexity and flexibility. Further information
regarding this option will be added to the site soon.
Q.
How much does the completed aircraft really going to cost?
A.
The total cost of finishing a Legendary Mustang depends heavily
upon engine choices and avionics. A Mustang can be up and flying
for as little as $100,000 with a modest power plant and spartan
set of avionics, or as much as $150,000 for a real fire breathing
firewall forward package and a high quality, VFR panel.
Q.
What are the pilot requirements for safe flight in a Legendary Mustang?
A.
It is safe to say that a good pilot with as little as 150 total
hours and a tail wheel endorsement can safely operate one of our
Mustangs. We have builders and owners who come from a huge array
of experience and backgrounds. From a retired Navy F-14 aviator
with thousands of hours military jet time, to a builder with a brand
new Private Pilots license, and about everything in between . The
Legendary Mustang is not difficult to fly in any mode. This is a
sport plane with very forgiving characteristics.
Q.
Is there a Flight Training program?
A.
We are in development of a pilot training program using our fully
instrumented, dual controlled TF. The program will enable a new
builder to come to the factory and spend as much time in the trainer
as he needs to get completely comfortable with all the systems,
ground ops, and flight characteristics of the Mustang. Also on the
local field is a highly recognized tail wheel / aerobatics school
that is available for tail wheel endorsements. Any pilot who works
though their program is well qualified to climb into one of our
Mustangs.
Q.
When my aircraft is complete is there an aircraft checkout or first
flight option?
A.
Yes. Our training pilot is available to come to your location and
help you get your newly completed project in the air for the first
time. A representative of the factory is also available at any time
during the building process or just prior to the first flight to
come out and assist in any way.
Q.
How do I get started?
A.
Just contact us either by phone and or email and well be happy to
get you on your way. A deposit is required for kit orders and varies
upon the factories workload and scheduling. We will work with everyone
to make the purchase of a Legendary Mustang as simple as possible. |
